UL 2271
Lithium Battery Safety Standard
UL 2271 is the gold standard for lithium-ion battery safety in light electric vehicles. This certification evaluates the entire battery system — not just individual cells — under extreme conditions that simulate real-world hazards.
What UL 2271 Tests:
- Overcharge Protection: Battery must safely shut down when charged beyond capacity, preventing thermal runaway.
- Short Circuit Resistance: Battery must withstand external short circuits without catching fire or exploding.
- Impact & Crush Testing: Battery must survive drops, impacts, and pressure without leaking or igniting.
- Thermal Abuse: Battery must endure extreme temperature cycles without degradation or failure.
- Mechanical Integrity: Vibration, shock, and drop tests simulate years of riding abuse.
UL 2849
Electric Bicycle System Standard
UL 2849 goes beyond battery safety — it evaluates the entire electrical system of the e-bike as an integrated unit. This includes the motor, controller, wiring, charger, and battery working together under stress.
What UL 2849 Tests:
- Electrical System Safety: Complete evaluation of motor, controller, wiring harness, and connections.
- Charger Compatibility: Charger must safely communicate with battery and prevent overcharging.
- Fire & Electrical Hazard Prevention: System must prevent electrical fires, shocks, and burns during normal use and foreseeable misuse.
- Environmental Stress: Temperature, humidity, and altitude testing for global reliability.
